Issue with CHS getting much slower.
About a week back, my computer began experiencing freezing problems—its screen would freeze, the mouse and keyboard stopped responding, and I had no choice but to shut it down. Once powered off, it would restart after 20 to 30 minutes of waiting before launching again. This issue repeated five or six times before I noticed it was a lasting problem.
I examined the system logs and discovered that one of my SSDs was showing a bad sector. Since it was the only reported issue, I suspected it was the root cause, even though it’s a standard 2TB drive that hasn’t been used in months and sits unused.
I ran CHKDSK to attempt repairs. Initially, it worked well, fixing several corrupted files and processing around 11,000 files per hour. However, the speed dropped significantly to about 7 files per hour, and it took roughly 20 hours without finding any more errors.
My concern is why CHKDSK is progressing so slowly and whether there’s anything I can do besides waiting another five years for it to complete.
There is a solid justification for the slowdown, as it encounters suspected bad sectors and repeatedly rechecks them while trying to recover affected data to a backup location on the disk. This method is particularly slow on HDDs. All such issues are logged and documented by S.M.A.R.T., which can be accessed through tools like Crystal Disk Info.
Might be better to stop it then pull the drive. If there is any data in it you need perhaps see if you can use a tool to clone it. Ddrescue used to be good for that but someone mentioned a newer application, the name escapes me at the moment though.
Review the program named gsmart control. However, I wouldn't invest much time in testing since any work with that drive will cause wear and tear. If you need the data, consider cloning the drive to a known working one, then run check disk against that good drive to attempt cleanup.
Use Crystal Disk Info to assess its health. The SMART section displays the recorded data, with results appearing almost immediately.
