Issue with BIOS restarting after GPU and PSU upgrade
Hi everyone, last weekend I upgraded my GPU from a 1070 (Gigabyte Wind Force OC) to 6800xt (PowerColor Red Dragon) and my PSU from 550W to 750W. I also purchased an M.2 drive (Crucial P3 1TB M.2-2280 PCIe 3.0 x4) because I needed more storage and hadn’t used either slot on my motherboard (Gigabyte B450 AORUS Elite).
After installing these new components, I encountered several issues:
1. The PC won’t power on unless I turn off the PSU for 10 seconds and then restart it.
2. The BIOS resets every time the computer boots, preventing me from accessing Windows (10) after changes, forcing a full reboot to reset the BIOS.
3. The BIOS reports the CPU temperature as -55°C, but software shows 95°C when idle—indicating the fan isn’t running at full speed.
4. The M.2 drive isn’t being recognized by the BIOS or software.
I’ve tried several fixes without success:
- Swapping out the plug sockets on my extension lead
- Disconnecting everything except the PC from the lead
- Updating the BIOS to the latest version
- Replacing the CMOS battery (system clock stopped resetting; this was noticed yesterday, occurring intermittently for about half a week)
- Changing M.2 slots and rearranging SATA connections (though I’m unsure if I did it correctly for slot 2 initially)
My current workaround is using FanControl to manage CPU and system fans instead of relying on the BIOS. It seems the BIOS can’t save changes, which prevents me from detecting the M.2 drive. This also causes my RAM to run with XMP disabled and makes booting extremely slow due to Fast Boot being turned off. Additionally, the first boot is coming from the wrong drive.
I think all these problems are connected, and I’m seeking advice. I might consider buying a new motherboard at this point since nothing else seems to be resolving my issues.

After more testing, the BIOS only restarts when I enable the XMP profile, suggesting the RAM might be defective and requires re-seating or replacement. It's also possible the malfunctioning RAM is interfering with the M.2 detection.
