Issue with battery or power supply in Dell Inspiron 15 3000 series laptop
The battery failed to function and remained at zero. A replacement was ordered, installed, the previous one was swapped in, and now the old unit is being charged.
A summary of events: The laptop uses an HDD that likely caused slow performance in Windows 10. During updates, it would warn about unsupported hardware for Windows 11. After switching to a SSD and installing Windows 11, the new power supply worked well. However, inserting the original battery caused recognition issues, showing no charge.
I suspected the update might have disabled battery detection, possibly due to changes in the BIOS. The original power supply had damage at the tip, so I replaced it with a new one. Initially unsuccessful, I ordered a fresh battery, which charged at 90%. Curiosity led me to test reinserting the old battery—now it was charging. There appear to be two batteries, one new and one original, along with a second power supply.
Could the damaged unit have altered the laptop’s behavior so that it ignores the original battery but accepts the new one at 90%? Or is there a deeper compatibility issue with Windows 11? I’m concerned this might repeat if I update again. Until then, keeping both batteries charged is my plan. If one ever stays dead, the same problem could arise during an update.
I also recall a tablet that faced similar problems and wondered if charging it properly might restore its functionality. Fortunately, metal contacts are available to charge it, though disassembling the laptop isn’t something I’m planning to do now.
