I just purchased the ASUS RT-AX82U 5400 Dual Band on Amazon today. I noticed it lacks a DSL port and the ISP router doesn’t support modem mode. My current ping is around 15 ms with 50 downloads and 20 uploads, which seems normal in my area. They’re planning to switch to fiber optic soon, so I’m unsure what the best setup would be. Should I try using a modem with the router or should I return it for a DSL-enabled model? Thanks!

If everything checks out, DSL performs well. I’m not sure DSL modems are available separately anymore—most are bundled with a TelCo. They usually come as a complete kit (modem, router, AP, switch). If you’re hoping for fiber, it might be worth considering a different solution. What issues did you encounter with your current system that led you to believe a new setup would help? Your connection speeds and latency are excellent.

Set up the ASUS router in AP mode. This ensures it manages the Wi-Fi without needing further adjustments. Upgrading to Fiber will provide a reliable device.

Setting it up as an AP would likely have minimal impact on the port area. When fiber arrives, you’d probably only need to update certain configurations rather than major changes. Since you’re in the UK, ensure your setup complies with local regulations and consider any necessary adjustments for UK standards.

Your ISP offers fiber directly to your home and supplies a media converter or internet gateway device that handles fiber inputs and outputs to Ethernet/RJ45. Which ports are available on the wall? RJ45 with Ethernet connections can link to any router or switch.

Right now the router uses just an DSL port and a 30-meter Ethernet cable. My ISP offers both DSL and a WAN connection, which includes four RJ45 ports.

I would follow the suggestion to keep using the ASUS in AP mode until fiber arrives. If it's a BT/Openreach connection instead of another option, fiber will include a media converter—just connect the new router after switching it back to router mode.

That's what I thought, but hoping they get it in fast.

I understand what you're going through. I spent two years closely observing them before their announcement, and I finally secured my spot just a few weeks ago.
