Issue with Asus Prime Z270A i7 7700K not starting up
About a year ago I had to reach for the internet to look something up. After heading to the nearest of my eight foldable laptops at home, downstairs, I faced an overly large update window from Windows. There was no choice but to install it—how long would a Windows update take? Without hesitation, I opened Task Manager and ended the pop-up. Once I gathered my data, the machine functioned normally when checked via remote desktop before I went to sleep. That was the final time it worked. The next morning, I suspect it was locked. I attempted a reboot but it wouldn’t restart again. I ran diagnostics, swapped power supplies, removed memory and chips, checked all hardware connections. I purchased what was labeled CH341a but it didn’t display "A" after CH341. The board itself was black, suggesting it was a CH341 Black. A neoprogrammer managed to save two identical dumps with special handling. That link explains the steps I took to successfully copy and rebuild a new BIOS using Fd44editor. The neoprogrammer then wiped, flashed, and verified the BIOS chip. Intel i7 7700K... memory not installed. Asus Prime Z270-A 15" monitor connected via display port (IGPU) 1302. BIOS was customized on Asus with Fd44editor Seasonic Prime 1300 Platinum, swapped in for testing. The motherboard had no peripherals except... one fan connector to the fan header, another to the CPU header, and a beep speaker for the CPU cooler. The CPU cooler fan was either installed or not—no difference. I powered the board, and the RGB lights activated, though the power button stayed off. Pushing the power button fans spun up and kept running. XMP light appeared next to the XMP switch (enabled/disabled didn’t matter). No activity detected. None of my other motherboards are Z270 + i7 7700K compatible—mostly Z390 and i7 9700K models. Anyone in the lower mainland BC knows someone I can test some parts? Any advice or tests I haven’t mentioned? Thanks for listening, Joe.
Never encountered Windows urging an update. It feels more like a virus to me. I didn’t dive into the details, sorry if I’m wrong, but I’d likely just thought about reinstalling Windows. Edited February 11 by leclod
Windows doesn’t enforce any updates in the manner you’re experiencing. It seems like a virus might be involved. Why isn’t it starting now? That’s unusual and may not be connected to the update problem. What happens next? Does it power off completely? It remains where you described? Does it immediately shut down?
