Here we see a configuration that functions, though not optimally. Keep quiet with the base 801 setup (3x140mm fans), Corsair rm550x Asrock z370 pro4, I9 9900k, DDR4 16GB at 2666MHz CL15 from Kingston HyperX Evga GTX1070. Storage includes a Samsung Evo 860 500GB SSD, Toshiba TR150 480GB, and a Wi-Fi card via PCIe RME HDSP 9652 on legacy PCIe. Originally I used an i7 8700K, everything worked perfectly. I upgraded to the I9 9900k with the latest BIOS 3.30. However, BSODs appear randomly. Default BIOS settings don’t suit the I9 well. In the BIOS, lowering the processor speed manually to a max of 4.2GHz per core and setting the clock frequency to 100 helps. Still, I can’t exceed these numbers. What’s strange? The I9 in default turbo should reach 4.7GHz across all cores. Benchmarks showed CPU performance lower than expected for an I9 at 15000+ MHz, with idle temps around 30-36°C. In Cinebench 80 reached a peak of about 80°C. Initially, I suspected the PSU wasn’t sufficient. I removed every component except the I9, leaving just an 8GB RAM stick and a system SSD. Even in BIOS at 5GHz, power consumption stayed under 550W, which is reasonable for an I9 5GHz. So far, the BIOS defaults aren’t delivering optimal results. What should I do next? Try a different motherboard, check the PSU, or consider if the I9 chip itself might be faulty. The Asrock z370 pro4 supports 10 phases, but those numbers seem off (4*2)+2). I’m wondering if the VRM isn’t providing enough voltage for the I9. Could that be the issue?

My prediction is VRM cooking. Likely thermal shutdown will occur. The hardware unboxed tested affordable Z370 boards, and the Pro4 experienced shutdowns when certain high-end chips were present.

I concur with @Jurrunio. Pro4 lacks sufficient heatsinks on the VRMs, which is a poor choice for power-hungry components such as the 9900k.

See... considering a fresh MB for 9900K, any thoughts? Yeah, I've tested both BIOS versions 3.20 and 3.30 – same outcomes in theory. The only concerns are CPU and memory temperature readings staying stable throughout. Possibly BIOS or VRM problems? It could be something broader.

I don't have personal opinions, but the Gigabyte Aorus Z390 Pro seems suitable for stock i9 9900K turbo boosts without needing extreme overclocking.

Any Z390 board with a 9900k will be top-notch, especially if you go for the elite configuration. Keep the memory under the DDR3600 specs for the best performance. You might adjust the 9900k slightly—around 1.2v at 4.5ghz is possible on most models—and it should handle about 90 watts. The Pro4 could likely manage it, so it’s worth testing before committing to a new board.
