Hello everyone, I'm working on assembling a system with a 5900X on the B550 Steel Legend. I've successfully installed an Athlon 220GE to update the Ryzen 5000 BIOS, and everything seems to be running smoothly during bench tests. However, when loading the rest of my components, I encounter a hang at postcode A9, which corresponds to DXE_SETUP_START. It looks like it should start normally but gets stuck there. Could you help me figure out what's going on?
Board: ASRock B550 Steel Legend CPU
Processor: 5900X
Memory: 2x16GB Crucial Ballistix DDR4 3600 CL16 (previous upgrades didn’t make a difference)
Storage: 1TB Kingston NVME SSD
Graphics: MSI Ventus RTX 2080 Super
From what I observe, the main issue seems to be memory. Test each RAM stick one by one in its slot and check which ones are not recognized or post. Also verify your 5900x for any bent or missing pins.
I've tested the standard RAM modules but will try each one in every slot (starting from the left). I inspected the CPU beforehand and didn't notice any bent pins—it went in easily on the first attempt. If that doesn't work, I'll remove the cooler and inspect further.
No excitement from each stick in its place. Problems persist with A9.
Could be a potential DOA CPU. Would you like another motherboard to try and confirm the result?
I actually tried it. I wasn't expecting BIOS updates for that B450M board yet, but it worked. I'm considering giving it a shot just to confirm. EDIT: I planned to proceed but ASRock's site advises against using the BIOS if your CPU matches the one inside, so I won't check that now. I removed the CPU and found no bent pins. I discovered others on forums reporting the same issues—BIOS hadn't been updated for Zen 3. I updated my BIOS with an Athlon 220GE, which isn't officially supported by B550, but it booted fine. After updating, it entered a boot loop, suggesting the new BIOS might have removed compatibility for older CPUs and added Zen 3, though it could still require a Zen 2 chip to finish. A friend with a 3700X is offering it to me this Wednesday so we can test it then.
