Issue with Alienware 51m monitor malfunction
Anyone have any suggestions? I own an Alienware Area-51m from 2019. In 2022 the LCD backlight began to fail. It’s an unusual problem—when you increase the brightness, the whole screen goes black. You could still see the display but it was dark. Setting the brightness to zero would light it up, yet raising it again makes it darker. The situation worsened over time and became consistently dark. Dell replaced the LCD, but the issue persisted afterward and resolved itself. After eight months I’m experiencing the same problem again. I’m currently in a dispute with Dell regarding their 90-day warranty and UK consumer law, which requires the product to be fit for purpose. They could claim it was faulty and replace it. But I’m not sure. Has anyone encountered this issue before? Could it be a defective LCD or something else entirely?
I don’t have details about that exact computer model, but what you’re describing is common backlight malfunction. LCDs use a backlight—either LED or CCFL—to illuminate the screen. Even without it, you can still view the display because the LCD itself is working, though visibility will be poor. Likely a failing part controls the backlight, such as capacitors, inverters, or LEDs. Components on the mainboard might be deteriorating. When contacting Dell, simply mention the backlight is off, you can see the screen, and the display/GPU is operational but dim—this helps them identify the problem.
