Hi team, welcome! I see you're working with an iMac 24 C2D 8800GS and need help setting up a USB bootable drive. I'm trying to reinstall macOS but only have a Windows machine to make the drive. I've used various methods—Diskpart, Transmac, Etcher, Yosemite—but when I try to boot from the USB in the Mac, it doesn't appear. The USB is 2.0, but none of the ports show it. I've also reset the NVRAM and restarted, but nothing works. Windows tools aren't helping either. Any suggestions? Thanks, D.

Visit Yosemite and El Capitan, then head to Snow Leopard and/or Lion. The iMac is 7 years newer than that.

Check if a Mac is available for installation and see if the current iMac runs the latest macOS version.

I’m having trouble accessing anything on my PC. After trying Snow Leopard, it shows up when I boot but then causes kernel panics. Removing the device stops them. My hard drive failed and I replaced it with an SSD. I’ll give Snow Leopard another shot to check if it works now.

The iMac's drive is blank and comes with no operating system pre-installed.

The installation has old Windows 10 setup. Should I suggest formatting? You only have a Windows PC.

Based on my observations, I've found more success beginning at an older version rather than updating. For example, starting with 10.7 and moving to 10.11 worked better.

@Ashley MLP Fangirl It's unclear why you're frustrated with @FakeKGB, but their advice is worth considering. Using older versions of OS X can be a helpful troubleshooting approach. While the system can run up to El Cap, that doesn't imply it's a bad idea to try an older release.
