Issue Occurred On Ubuntu 20.04LTS With AMD 590 Graphics, Causing System Freeze During High-Resolution Tasks
Hey Guys,
As the title implies, I’m currently using Ubuntu 20.04 LTS with a XFX Radeon 590. I’m running the native open-source drivers for my AMD GPU, have the latest Mesa package installed, and have Wine set up. I followed the guide from Chris Titus here:
https://christitus.com/ultimate-linux-gaming-guide/
Every time I benchmark with Unigine Heaven or Valley or run a game via Proton through Steam Play, the screen goes black after about 5–10 minutes and the system crashes. I had to completely restart the machine. Initially, I thought the GPU might be bad, but after re-imaging the PC with Windows 10 everything functioned properly. Benchmarking and games ran smoothly. I’m still confused, so I reached out to the community for help. It seems like the Ubuntu image is detecting my GPU but still using my built-in graphics or CPU until it crashes. I’m not sure what’s going on.
Machine Specs:
i5-7600K 4.2ghz
MSI B150 GAMING M3 Motherboard
16gb DDR5 Memory
XFX Radeon R9 590 Fatboy
Thanks for any advice or suggestions!
Shoot, a junky PSU is usually a key suspect here, but that doesn't appear to be the case (though even a theoretically good PSU can fail).
What are your temperatures like?
As for custom drivers, whether there could be a power issue being caused there is out of my wheelhouse; I never tinker with GPU BIOS unless I'm troubleshooting a card-in-hand.
