Issue involving ink-cartridge identification on Epson R280?
Following experience with refillable or single-use cartridges without issues, recently the R280 began refusing to identify any cartridges or the same ones. Assistance would be greatly appreciated—consider trying a repair before discarding what appears to be a functional printer.
I powered it off the previous evening with all refillable cartridges installed and operational; the next morning, when it was turned on, every cartridge displayed "unknown." I attempted all recommended fixes from ink suppliers or online forums—such as leaving it off for extended periods, skipping cartridge cycles—but none resolved the problem.
Using refillable or after-market cartridges, whether fully resetting or not, didn’t change the outcome. The printer version still reads 6.51, and no updated files appear in the expected directories (C:\Windows\System32\spool\drivers\x64\3 or C:\ProgramData\EPSON), except temporary ones created each time.
When inserting cartridges one at a time, each is labeled "genuine Epson," but the ink level remains hidden. After following the "how to" instructions or using the ink button to change colors, I’m repeatedly asked to "insert missing cartridges." The already inserted ones stay visible as "Genuine Epson" in the status monitor’s info window. However, once the last "missing" cartridge is added, all inserted ones show "unknown."
Removing any cartridges and restarting the replacement process works—once. If I open and close the cartridge cover while changing the printer button and the compartment shows an empty state, something unusual is happening.
If I clear all cartridges, run a replacement cycle without inserting anything, and then power off for five minutes, I proceed with another cartridgeless cycle. Then I insert one cartridge at a time, starting with the yellow one. Suddenly, unfamiliar errors or messages appear, strongly indicating a stealth firmware update may have been applied (how could this be?).
Continuing to insert cartridges one by one, all are recognized as "genuine Epson" until the final one is added, at which point the same "unknown" status persists.
I've attempted to clean the contacts in the printer and cartridges using a lint-free cloth. Have you tried using old cartridges? Place them in the printer, turn it on, let it recognize them, wait 10 minutes, then try inserting new ones. If this doesn't resolve the issue, remove the new cartridges, power off the printer via the power button, unplug it from the wall, let it sit for 10 minutes to clear memory, then plug it back in and turn it on. Observe the results.
Thank you for your feedback. This was indeed my initial attempt—set up a brand-new VM, installed drivers from the ground up, matching the version on the affected desktop. Unfortunately, I received identical outcomes. It seems there isn’t any tool that offers better control or clearer insight into the printer’s status. The WIC utility confirmed the inkpad counter is functioning but didn’t provide details about the cartridge problems.

Interestingly, using a brand-new set, removing one cartridge at a time and cycling through the changes (replacing the missing one and partially completing the cycle) triggers these popups. With all cartridges inserted—including the last one—there’s a display indicating they’re full except the last one, which seems to show empty status in an earlier picture before becoming full again. Eventually, closing and reopening the window reveals all cartridges marked as X-ed (picture #3). This suggests that for a brief moment the cartridges were recognized. I’ve tried various steps—insertion, power-off/on, cache clear, etc.—but nothing seems to work. Uncertain about what’s happening, I’m hesitant to buy genuine cartridges just to try and solve it. Any suggestions for a working method would be greatly appreciated—shooting in the dark is clearly not worth the effort.
