So my friend just got Fallout 76 for Steam and when he starts playing it, the game jumps to a point where Steam says he's played for a while but doesn't show anything on his screen. When he checks Task Manager and clicks details, it still shows 76 but nothing appears on his screen.

It might be any of these things. The redistribution wasn't set up, the GPU drivers are old, and the operating system is damaged. Ask your friend to install the newest GPU drivers and attempt the process once more.

The process will continue until steam indicates sufficient time has passed, though it won't show anything on the screen. More details are needed to capture the necessary screenshots.

steam has a feature that tracks your overall playtime across games, though it doesn't show this directly on the screen.
