Hey there, I opened my 7700k again to reapply thermal paste after it’s been a while since the last time. I made the mistake of using a tiny amount of super glue to secure the heat spreader back. When I removed it for the second time recently, I spotted two small areas of exposed copper on the PCB. After cleaning up as much as possible, I reapplied the paste and hoped for a good result.
My computer only works with single-channel memory (16GB + two 8GB dimms) in slots B1 and B2 on my ASUS Strix Z270e board. Honestly, I’m an idiot for using super glue on the CPU to hold it in place. I should have just used clamps instead. I checked all my RAM in every slot—everything looks fine except for slots A1 and A2, which aren’t working. I’m assuming that’s because of my CPU, but I’m pretty sure it’s my mistake. The board itself still seems okay.
I’m torn about what to do next. Should I look for a used 7700k on eBay? Or should I upgrade to a new CPU/motherboard and go with the 9700K or switch to AMD? I’m open to both options. I bought this 7700k just before the 8K series launched, and it had socket issues with LGA 1151. From a cost perspective, finding a used one would make sense, but I’m tempted by newer models since CPU tech has advanced so much lately. Money isn’t a big concern for me—I can afford to spend a bit if it means a better build.
One thing is clear: I don’t want my system to be down because of this. I also don’t want to risk losing data, since I have hundreds of GB of photos and videos saved. My GPU is a 1080 Ti, and I’m into gaming and editing with Adobe products.
Thanks for any advice! I’m really stressed right now. 😓
They usually use superglue by heating it with a little nail polish remover. I’m not sure how that affects a CPU, but I don’t think there’s a perfect solution. From what I know, a 7700k is similar to a Ryzen 3300x, which costs around $120. I’m going to wait until the new graphics cards come out—16GB should handle most games.
I’d choose a better motherboard and CPU if I were you. If you’re up for it now, go with Ryzen 3000 instead of Intel, but if you have time, wait until the Ryzen 4000 arrives.
