It might be simple, but I needed to confirm since my mind keeps struggling to find a solution despite all the research. We just moved into my fiancé's mom's basement, upgraded our internet to 1000 mbps up and down, and even replaced the router. It works fine during the day, but at 8 PM everything slows down—lag appears, ping increases, and speeds drop with every speed test. Anyone know how to fix this?

It usually occurs late at night, around 8 PM, when I first noticed it. We’re only hardwired, so it only happens at night or during the day. Morning and afternoon are fine, and speeds work just right. Even though everyone in the house is using the internet, it’s mostly around 8 that things start and last all night. *Note* me and my fiancée are the ones hardwired; the rest of us use Netflix and don’t notice. It’s just me and my fiancée playing games.

It appears your ISP is experiencing heavy traffic consistently during the same hours each day. Unfortunately, there’s nothing you can do about it. That’s why they mention “UP TO” speeds—reflecting the maximum potential performance.

Do you use Xfinity or Comcast? Most major internet companies exaggerate their speeds and there’s little you can do except switch providers if possible. Consider another internet service if you’re able. You might keep pushing your current provider until they lower the price, since they’re not delivering what you pay for. Or you could keep demanding more until they improve your connection in your area.
