I observed stable performance metrics with no significant changes in CPU, GPU power, or memory usage. The charts remain fairly steady even during the freezes.
The WD Eco Green drives are notorious for this problem due to how they literally turn off after a few seconds of disuse. A lot of times, if a game tries use a random sound effect or display an on-screen prompt, the engine will stutter momentarily while it waits for the drive to spin back up.
WD Green tends to slow down and park more frequently compared to standard drives. This behavior is intentional for power efficiency, cooling, and quiet operation. It's built for secondary storage rather than high-performance tasks like gaming or main system use. For those needs, WD Blue or WD Black are better options. Some enthusiasts even use WD Green as a gaming drive and report satisfaction with it. A helpful tool, WDIDLE3, can extend the time before the drive parks or spins down: http://products.wdc.com/support/kb.ashx?id=75Bc5D
I’m not trying to jump on the rabbit trail, but I keep running into this issue. I’ll attempt to use that tool with my green drive, though my main games—LoL and WoW—are all stored on my SSD. WoW doesn’t have any FPS freezes, but LoL often stalls unexpectedly during play.
I agree with @ThatOneCheetah's ideas and suggest verifying your system's performance during freezes. The issue could stem from more than just storage drives or general hardware. Captain_WD.
