Issue 9600kf experiencing crashes during Prime95 execution on stock configurations following an optimization attempt.
I own a Z390 Aorus Pro Wi-Fi card paired with an i5-9600kf processor. I'm just starting out and about a week ago I caused my system to fail completely, forcing me to spend several days searching online for a solution. My current issue is that when attempting to overclock, instead of the Prime95 crashing everything, my whole system fails to boot. After multiple attempts, the machine doesn’t start at all. I reset the CMOS and performed a fresh Windows installation, hoping for a clean slate except for the fact that running Prime95 on default settings still triggers crashes due to small FFTs. I increased the voltage slightly to check for stability, but it still crashes even at 1.3v. I’m quite puzzled and would appreciate any advice.
Edit: My setup includes a NZXT Kraken 240mm AIO, and during overclocking my temperatures never exceeded 150°F under load.
I’m also using Intel Performance Maximizer, which seemed to be a more manageable choice.
complete system specifications are available, including the PSU make and model.
It began as this prebuilt setup. I've since added the gigabyte z390 Aorus pro WiFi motherboard, the NZXT Kraken x53 CPU cooler, and a 16GB Corsair RAM kit. The power supply is an Apevia ATX-PR600w, featuring an 80+ gold rating.
Could we assume the CPU is defective then? It came in prebuilt and has been updated, so I can’t return it. The issue now is it won’t boot with XMP enabled, which was previously stable. This suggests a problem with the chip, possibly a faulty one. I’m considering getting a replacement but want to confirm first.
THAT COMPONENT POSES A RISK. Particularly with your i9-9900KF, I'm not surprised it might be the issue.
It's actually an i5-9600kf. But no matter, if that power supply is indeed a risk that's worth knowing. I had to redo all the cables and reseat RAM the first time I swapped the b365 mobo for the z390, and again a few days ago when I moved it into an XPG Battlecruiser chassis. I'm sure everything is properly seated and connected. The GPU temperature is just fine, even when overclocked, it stays around 160F under full load. So what are the chances it's only the power supply, not the chip? It's strange to me that Prime 95 used to work well, but now it doesn't, and XMP stopped functioning yesterday.
Seems like it isn't working yet. I'm making progress now.
Edit: BIOS has been updated to version F12j
Tried running Prime95 small FFTs once more and it still crashed with a different code. Before the BIOS update I encountered machine_check_exception. The search says it's a hardware issue affecting the processor, memory, I/O or system bus. Memtest86 recently cleared the RAM so it seems unlikely. Thoughts?
Edit: It still refuses XMP support and insists on optimized defaults, stripping the xmp profile before booting.
