They need to match the trend they established, especially after introducing 4K on YouTube a decade ago. The norm has largely shifted to 1080p now. The ability to handle 1080p processing quickly enough when such changes occur reinforces this idea.

I received another email reply from YouTube support. They seem to have made some changes, likely a permanent fix, since all four of my videos uploaded recently stopped showing the 1440p option and were using the VP9 codec instead, now running at 1440p with VP9. The support representative didn't address the problem or acknowledge that it was YouTube's issue. It felt like they were blaming my system for not supporting VP9 or suggesting I wasn't familiar with proper encoding methods. That didn't make sense. My system clearly supports VP9, otherwise I wouldn't have noticed it missing in those videos. I hope they've actually resolved the issue and it works for everyone too.

Yeah, I agree, it seems like they've resolved the issue now, at least for me (and I'm sure many others too). All the videos I uploaded that were stuck at 1080p are now playing in 1440p. I think the blame should go to the end user, but unfortunately, this is what many big tech companies do. I doubt it's the support person's fault—they were clearly instructed to say that.

The same issue occurs with my YouTube uploads, showing 1440p60 instead of 1080p60.

The issue has been resolved for nearly three months. What you're seeing now is likely just a longer wait for 1440p processing, particularly with lengthy videos. Keep in mind we're also entering the holiday season, which may mean more uploads and slower servers for high-resolution tasks.

I've already shared several videos lasting about 6-7 minutes recently, and they all completed successfully at 1440p. The processing time was slightly longer than usual, but not significantly so.

In the coming days, I'll upload a few longer videos—roughly double the length—and will update you on the processing duration.

I've been experiencing a similar issue recently, at least over the past week or so. My 1440p videos are taking much longer to process compared to before. Out of the last eight uploads, six of them took significantly longer than expected—usually more than 24 hours after upload. Normally, they finish within 12 to 14 hours, but now they never seem to complete fully.

1080p videos are processing in a reasonable time frame, usually within an hour or two, while 2k and 4k take much longer. However, my 1440p videos are taking over 20 times longer. I've had to delete each video and re-upload it until it processes correctly. This is really frustrating because I set the videos to Unlisted until all resolutions were available. I believe people prefer watching in higher resolutions, but 1080p looks poor, especially with fast-moving content.

I'm not very impressed with YouTube right now, and I doubt it will change anytime soon.

This hasn't been the situation for me, and understanding your point is challenging since you begin by stating they never process fully, only to conclude they take up to 20 times longer. Based on what I know, I'm guessing the time required is about five times longer than before.

It seems to vary depending on video length, but I posted a few 14-15 minute videos yesterday around midday, and they were processed in 1440p by early this morning. Of course, usually they would have been completed later that day or night, but with the recent surge in uploads due to COVID and the holiday season, it's clear many people are uploading now.

In my view, things haven't been as bad as they were three months ago when processing wasn't even possible within a few days.

Please be patient and appreciate that it's still functioning, even if much slower. These services are far from essential, which is fortunate they're still operational.

It seemed a bit unclear, but the videos that never finished were those that didn’t process after almost two days, which I ended up deleting. The ones that do finish I’ve kept for nearly two days before they eventually reach 1440p, as long as I’m patient—though I’m not always.
It’s just annoying to see the "Processing HD version, SD complete" message flash for a full day.
I get it that with all the activity, YouTube is being pushed more than usual, so things might feel slower temporarily. Still, I’ve seen videos go from 1440p to 1440p in under a day, and this was just last week. Hopefully, my next upload will hit 1440p so I can finally make it public.
Yes, we’re really lucky that non-essential services are still running to keep us entertained.

You haven't specified whether the time you mentioned covers upload duration or just processing time after upload, especially the HD processing time once SD processing is complete. That means your ISP upload speed is relevant if the total time includes upload. Also, the length of the videos wasn't mentioned.

I'm feeling a bit frustrated right now because I assumed I had three new videos ready to share, but it turns out the first one I took never got uploaded. It shows about 34 minutes remaining for upload, which should be closer to an hour after SD processing finishes. I’m hoping the 1440p version will be done by tonight.

I usually wait until 1440p processing is finished before posting, since I’m unsure if viewers want fullscreen or different display sizes. They look fine at 1080p on my TV and in YT’s small viewer, but they appear very blurry in fullscreen without 1440p.
