Is your Ryzen 3600 getting too hot?
I’ve only used Intel before. Upgrading my previous I5 Gen3 with a better air cooler brought it down to around 65°C during gaming. The Ryzen 3600 on an MSI B450 Gaming Plus Max with the stock cooler is reaching the 90s while playing Folding at Home or DOOM. I’ve heard Ryzen tends to get hot, but this setup seems to be getting close to 95°C.
That's an issue. Even without the best cooling solution, the stock and cooler should handle temperatures around 3800°C without trouble. Did you use thermal paste? P.S. The third-gen Ryzen performs better than Intel's in this regard.
It seems the temperature is quite elevated. I’d like to verify if the cooler is positioned properly.
You just applied the pre-applied thermal paste and tightened it securely. For a better setup, consider upgrading both the air cooler and the thermal paste. No advice needed—I haven’t checked coolers or paste in five years.
Ryzen tends to stay cooler compared to other Intel models. Reinstall your cooling solution. Tighten all the connections until they no longer move, and ensure thermal paste is applied correctly between the cooler and processor.
Thermal paste options are quite flexible (just a few degrees matters). Your current cooler should work fine with a mounting bracket, or you can use a standard single-tower cooler if needed. Cryorig H7, Arctic Esports 34, and Hyper 212 seem like solid choices.
Great that you didn’t overdo it. Just remount and apply pressure evenly. You might want a Hyper 212 or any reputable single tower cooler. If you can afford it, an AIO would be ideal. I currently have a 240mm Corsair AIO on my 3600x, and it stays below 70°C even with heavy use. Any well-known brand should work for cooling performance.
It seems like you're weighing options for cooling your system. You mentioned avoiding temperatures above 95°C and found an Arctic cooler model that handles around 65-70°C well. You also considered a refurbished unit at a low price, and a quieter alternative like the Noctua NH-D15 or the Scythe Mugen 5 Rev.B.
