Is your laptop showing no screen?
Hey my Thinkpad E540 has a problem. When I press the power button, it turns on, but the fan spins and the CPU gets hot. The fans usually adjust speed normally, but now the i thinkpad logo on the palm rest is glowing red, and the fn key had a green light. I managed to turn that off somehow. There is nothing on the screen. I tried different ram that works fine, different ram slots, removed the battery, removed the wifi card, reseated the cpu, removed the cmos battery, resetting the cmos by holding the power button for some time and using an external monitor. Removing the ram makes it beep 4 times. The only thing i didnt try is to get a new cmos battery. The old one is getting down to about 1,75 volts. I dont think that the laptop needs the cmos battery at all and 1,75 volts should be enough, maybe im wrong but i dont want to spend money on something that i wouldnt need. Can you help me fix this laptop please? I dont have money for a new one and i dont have any other laptop.
Welcome to the forums! Newcomers here, so make sure to take out the RAM, the battery pack, and the wall plug. Then press and hold the power button on your laptop for about 30 seconds. Also, grab an eraser and wipe down the gold contacts where the RAM sticks are touching them. Get that stuff clean before putting it back in one stick at a time, then use the external power to start up the computer. I don't think you really need that little battery on the motherboard anymore either, maybe just 1.75 volts is enough; I might be wrong, but I'm not sure if I should spend money on something nobody uses. Sorry for any confusion, though a CMOS battery isn't super expensive no matter where you live!
Thank you for getting back to me. I tried wiping the memory by holding down the power button for thirty seconds, over and over again. I also put in a brand new battery for the computer's settings. Nothing worked at all. I don't know why this computer stopped working so badly.
