I replaced the old cooling fan on my Intel 4930K because I thought the pump or fans might be failing. It was making a lot of noise, so I went for a quieter option—an air cooler. I installed a Noctua NH U12A and two NF-F12 fans on top of the case. The exhaust fans pull in air while the intake fans bring fresh air in. My BIOS shows temperatures reaching around 40°C, and Windows HWMonitor confirms this. According to the chip specs, the cooler should spin at about 70 or 80 RPM, which is a bit high. It hasn’t reset itself, so it’s not clearly overheating yet. I played a few games and streamed on Twitch using Avermedia 4K; temperatures stayed stable and performance felt normal. The main question is: how can I bring the temps down? Am I missing something in BIOS? Could it be a faulty sensor? I restored everything to default settings, but haven’t adjusted anything much. I considered overclocking earlier but didn’t pursue it. My build used an optimized EATX case, a large Meshify 2 XL, and GeForce 980 with Gigabyte Windforce. I’m using Asus X79 Sabertooth with 64GB Gskill Ripjaws DDR3.
A faulty sensor could be a factor. Before you replaced the cooler, what were the temperatures? Other potential issues include poor contact between the plate and the CPU’s IHS, which might require reseating or replacing the cooler. The interface between IHS and CPU has weakened, causing frequent shutdowns. An 80-degree reading is still within safe limits for the CPU. Your room temperature matters—around 30°C is typical, with idle temps often in the 40s.
I don't really remember the temperatures before. I thought it might have been a bit warm, maybe around 28°C, but not that hot. Eventually it turned into a file server or a gaming setup where my niece used it. I haven't paid much attention to it in about a year. This week I'm planning to re-seat the cooler and see if that helps. My idea was similar. The computer is in a cool basement, but I sometimes turn on a space heater to raise the temperature. If the temperature is low, there may be an issue. You should usually see about 10°C change when idle and around 40-60°C under load. Your CPU might also show signs of wear, meaning heat transfer isn't working as well or it needs more power than before.
Tjmax equals 100°C. For long-term stock clocks, 100°C should work if they’re running in a solid case with no airflow. It might be related to your case design or the thermal paste used under the IHS. If it’s a solid front with no ventilation, or if you’re using a non-soldered CPU, applying liquid metal could help. Unless you plan to overclock, you probably don’t need to worry about this.
You should target clock speeds that match the system's performance needs. The design you described seems suitable, with proper ventilation and exhaust placement. Since there was minimal variation when testing with the side panel, you're on the right track.
