I'm setting up my first gaming PC after a decade away, considering a Ryzen setup with a 3600 or a 3700X. I'm questioning whether the X570 chipset is worth the extra cost in 2020. My current rig uses a B450 (MSI B450 Tomahawk Max) priced around £90-100 in the UK, while an X570 board would add £50-60. If I can stretch my budget, it might be justified. The main advantage seems to be PCIe 4.0, which could help future upgrades, though not essential right now. I plan to pair it with a RTX 2070 Super and a 1440p 144Hz monitor, aiming for long-term upgrade flexibility.

It depends on how often you upgrade and your budget. Without considering my present setup, I've always chosen premium components for my PC builds. Except for hard drives, which are often used for video and gaming, I rarely replace parts unless they fail. With an RTX 2070 Super and a Tomohawk Max, it's hard to say when you'll decide to upgrade again. What will you do with the PCIe 4.0 slot? If you plan to upgrade soon, the x570 might be worth it. If you aim for three years or more, it’s probably not worth it. By 2023, your x570 will likely be outdated and you’ll need a newer model. We might even see DDR5 RAM in consumer devices by year-end.

The Tomahawk (Or B450-A PRO MAX) performs well beyond expectations. It can manage an 8-core processor along with a standard 3900X.

This was my perspective. I usually go for the latest model I can afford, but since B450 is only two years old and I haven't been there much recently, it's nice to do a quick check. Thanks!

Have you thought about checking out the B550? It seems likely to launch soon and could offer the advantages of both options. Just a thought.
