Recently, Windows installed the Creators Update without my consent or approval. Even after disabling the update service, restarting still triggered the "Windows is preparing your Updates" message. I’m curious if this is why my computer powers off automatically after a while. Is there a setting that handles this automatically? Or could another factor be causing these shutdowns? I assumed instability from mining might be the issue, but now it doesn’t show the expected crash notification. Do you think I can check the event log for clues or if there’s a new feature that silently shuts down Windows after inactivity? I need my machine running continuously, so this isn’t possible.

Are you using the newest Spector or Meltdown updates? They seem to be causing frequent crashes.

Could be the issue you're facing is related to the Sandy Bridge CPU. There might be ways to address it depending on the specific problem.

I've seen reports about the most recent fixes that block updates, leaving systems exposed. It's frustrating. Alternatively, consider removing the patch until Intel resolves the issue and releases a more stable update. The article you shared highlights this trend, and you'll likely encounter similar problems with future updates.

I’m thinking about switching away from Windows altogether. The only games I’ve played are Dota 2, which supports Vulkan so it runs on any distribution. I’ll check if I can reach the latest version without using the patch through the update settings. They claim I’m current, but it might be an optional update.

You're in luck, here's some news from the MS support. (Assuming you're into the kink of diving into the Registry settings, not my kind of thing) And heres when you can download it

I think you're referring to adjusting the power mode settings... likely setting it to enter standby or hibernate after a certain period.

Occasionally the system pauses every hour if activation fails. I discovered this after switching to a different UPS and power supply at a colleague’s workplace, only to notice the server license was set to evaluation mode.

It seems you're confirming the setup is complete. I managed to save my Windows 7 credentials.

I'm planning to set up Fedora this weekend using a 50 GB partition on my SSD. If it works out, I could explore other options too. Consider launching Windows inside a VM for later use.
