Hello, during my attempt to copy Windows 7 .ISO files from my HP laptop for my new setup, I encountered an issue. It seems this version is restricted, preventing transfer to the new machine. While searching for retailers in my country offering Windows 7, I discovered the Microsoft online Store and learned a Windows 8.1 Student edition is available for about $69.99. Regarding your questions, I’m curious how Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 stack up in performance, flexibility, and differences between them. Also, I need to clarify how Microsoft expects me to demonstrate my student status—should I simply list my school? Thank you ahead of time for your assistance! Cheers!

Set up Kubuntu or Lubuntu, then pause until Windows 10 arrives. If needed, it works with Windows 8.1 as well.

The new look might be tough to adapt to, but Windows 8.1 works well. A solid Linux distro is a great alternative if you don’t want certain Windows apps. For future studies, many schools provide free Windows and Office licenses for students.

Set up Linux before Windows 10 launches. However, Windows 8 is quite poor; for immediate needs, consider 8.1—it's better.

If you're familiar with advanced settings, the distinction is almost imperceptible. 8.1 runs slightly quicker than 7. The only two things I’d push back against are: the Bluetooth menu feels awkward on a touchscreen, and you can’t modify Wi-Fi connections when not connected. Otherwise, the Metro UI behaves like a full-screen start menu, and once you’re on the desktop it blends seamlessly with the rest.

I delayed the upgrade until late November due to warnings from others. Now I’m glad I changed sooner. It really works well. There was a noticeable shift in the interface, which makes sense since the OS needs to work on various devices. The learning process had its challenges, but it wasn’t too tough. I stuck to the setup guides and it took me about a week to adjust. I’d strongly suggest it to most people—just keep in mind that if you’re not ready for Win 10 right away, hold off unless you have the means.
