Is Windows 11 causing damage to my USB External HDDs?
I completely neglected the ESD, but the command is a bit different.
the path to that source image must be adjusted
edit the location of your esd file
change the directory reference accordingly
The document discusses encrypted files and provides guidance on following up with specific resources. It mentions a link for further assistance and highlights the need to verify if the information pertains to Windows 7(x64). The author expresses uncertainty about whether the suggested solutions are applicable and seeks clarification on the file actions being performed regarding USB external hard drives.
The esd/DISM procedure was tried but unsuccessful. DISM will not utilize any source it references. I believe the problem stems from a possible corruption in the entire update library. There is no particular folder or command; simply connecting to the computer causes all USB hard drives to drop and become corrupted. It seems Windows might be damaging the MFT and affecting all USB drives, likely due to misidentification. I ran an inline repair using a repair update last night. By this morning, after checking with chkdsk against most drives except one, the issue didn’t reappear—though the drive I didn’t run the repair on continues to generate frequent ntfs errors. Notably, all drives (except the faulty/control drive) now display BitLocker encryption, even though I never enabled it.
For inline repair I chose the "System Restore using Windows Update". I did this when the CBS log indicated all components were corrupted. I believed a full system replacement was necessary. This approach appeared effective. Following the last restart yesterday, the USB hard drives have remained stable so far. My assumption is that the update before the weekend disrupted the Windows management of usb hard drives and affected the update components.
Fascinating. The problem has repeated on the initial drives it occurred on earlier, roughly an hour ago.
No parts are reporting any corrupted components in the inventory.
I just noticed a "surprise removed" alert for the fresh drives in the new DAS(on UPS).
Windows parts started to malfunction one after another, so I restarted the system. I turned off the drive bay with the corrupted disks and also unplugged a camera I had used over the weekend. I plan to keep the new or replacement drives in the new bay connected and operational to monitor the situation.
I want to know: Open Reliability History/Monitor and choose the Days view.
Widen the window to view and read Reliability Details.
Pick a few days with multiple errors (red circles) and/or warnings (yellow triangles).
Capture screenshots of those days.

Also, open the Disk Management Window and expand it so all drives are visible, including external USB drives.
Post that image as well.
