I've been considering purchasing a HTC Vive. Over the years I've used it, I really enjoyed it. I've played games like Super Hot, Beat Saber, Job Simulator, and Tilt Brush. It's hard to put a number on how much I appreciate the Vive and VR experience. The Rift wasn't as impressive, but it still works well. For a used Vive priced around $440, it feels like a fair upgrade for what I'm planning. (Check the Amazon link for more details.) My current setup includes an AMD FX-6300 with 8GB DDR3 at 800MHz, some Mobo RAM, and a Gigabyte To; a Ryzen 5 2600 with 16GB Trident.Z RGB at 3000MHz MSI. I'm keeping my GPU, a GTX 970, which is also compatible with the Vive. On one hand, I should upgrade my PC since it's getting older... On the other, I'm passionate about VR and think my system can handle it until then. I'm deciding whether to upgrade first or buy the Vive now, but ultimately I'll do both. I've tested Steam VR and consistently maintained 90 FPS, with an average of 119 FPS in VRMark. So, for someone who loves VR, should I buy the Vive now and upgrade later, or upgrade first and then get the Vive?

Think about it—if your computer supports VR and the games you enjoy there, it’s worth getting one now. But with the holidays approaching (Black Friday and Cyber Monday) and if you’re mindful of your budget, upgrading your PC might be a better choice.

You'll be let down by the GTX 970's performance in tougher VR games, though...just a heads-up.

Make the PC updated first. VR becomes outdated quickly.

It's truly amazing, with plenty of excellent games available. Racing and flight simulators are incredible—worth every penny for me.

Purchase it directly from me—it's almost brand new.

I don't agree. I still play almost every day after several months of getting Rift. OP you might be able to play before the upgrade, but I doubt you can keep a stable 90FPS with that CPU. The SteamVR Benchmark is quite poor. However, you do have a capable GPU for many VR games. I also suggest trying Jet Island if you haven't already (it's quite new).

You mostly play a variety of games on the Rift, keeping it stocked since December 2016.
