Is this a safe overclock?
Is this a safe overclock?
This is my initial overclock attempt, I changed just the multiplier to 42.
Build details:
CPU: Intel Core i5-6600K 3.5GHz Quad-Core Processor
CPU cooler: Cooler Master Hyper 212 LED
MOBO: MSI Z170A GAMING M5 ATX LGA1151 Motherboard
RAM: Corsair Vengeance LED 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR4-3200 Memory
GPU: MSI GeForce GTX 1060 6GB 6GB GAMING X Video Card
After adjusting only the multiplier, here’s what I have:

I’m also curious about overclocking the RAM since it’s running at 2133 despite being set to 3200 at default.
Thanks!
overclock more! =) keep an eye on temperatures. maintain core temperature and enable auto shutdown when it reaches 80-90°C.
also, adjust your RAM settings by going to Advanced Frequency Settings and selecting Extreme Memory Profile (xmp). this should provide options for profile 1 or 2, which will set your RAM to 3200.
It could be a bit too much, but with proper cooling and keeping it below 50°C it should work.
if it doesn't damage the house or your mainboard, it's a secure overclock. the concern isn't whether it's safe, but whether it remains stable while using apps and games, and whether it stays within normal temperature limits.

Please check a CPU lookup to find out its recommended multiplier. I’m using an older Intel E8500 core 2 duo with a multiplier of 9.5. My motherboard has a Front Side Bus of 1600. According to published tables, setting the bus speed to 400 in BIOS and leaving other settings at AUTO gave me a speed of 3800 MHz, which is more than sufficient for my needs.
For memory, CPU-Z shows a DRAM speed of 400 with a 1:1 ratio. This seems quite safe.
I’m planning to use a modest Zalman 7,000 fan, keeping core temperatures in the low 50s.
I should note this build was assembled from used components (it’s just a hobby...). I purchased the E8500 on eBay for $5.84 ten years ago; back then it was selling for $200.
at 4200 Mhz my temperatures haven't risen above 40°C yet, so I feel safe for now. I'm wondering about the voltage settings though—I believe it's automatically adjusted by default.
You could potentially achieve speeds exceeding 4.2 Ghz, but 4.2 seems quite excessive already 😄
