Hello. I’m trying to confirm if I’m posting here correctly. My computer has been running for a while now, and it’s starting to feel a bit old. I’m considering a major upgrade. Currently, my setup looks like this: i7-4770K @ 4.5GHz (overclocked), ASRock Z87M Extreme4 Micro ATX LGA1150 board, 20GB DDR3 RAM, MSI GTX 1070TI “Gaming”, Samsung 850 EVO-Series 250GB SSD. This machine functions adequately for my tasks, but some games I play have trouble maintaining 60fps at the desired setting. The 1070TI was my most recent upgrade a few years back, and I’m planning to replace my CPU, motherboard, and RAM all at once with these components: Intel Core i5-10600K 4.1GHz, 6-core processor, MSI MPG Z490 GAMING PLUS ATX LGA1200 board, Corsair Vengeance LPX 32GB (2x16GB), DDR4-3200 CL16. Is this a solid upgrade? I’m confident the board can support even more high-end CPUs in the future. Thanks!
I wouldn't rely on CPU upgrades for that motherboard. Intel is shifting to 10nm and planning a 10nm backport to 14nm chips, which might need a different socket type that won't fit. AMD is also transitioning to AM5 for Zen 4, suggesting no straightforward upgrade path. The positive side is that the 10600k remains a solid option right now. Another point is that new consoles feature 8-core designs, and game engines are likely to boost multicore performance. This is influencing my consideration of 8 or 12 cores for the next upgrade, though I wouldn't feel compelled to go that high.
The i5 10600K paired with the 1070Ti offers solid performance, especially at 1080P. However, I suggest going with the Ryzen 5600X for better gaming results compared to the i9 10900K.
