This approach sounds practical and efficient. Buying Windows 8 now gives you a head start before Windows 10 launches later in 2015. Using an USB copy of Windows 10 as a boot drive is a smart way to simplify reinstallation. Just make sure your PC meets the requirements for both OS versions. Good plan!

I'm really looking forward to it—about 8 to 10 months. If I had the chance, I'd definitely do it, though it's not something I can currently consider.

Microsoft has a gathering in January, I assume they’ll share all consumer-related information. If it’s a subscription model, I’m unsure how I feel. I’ll go with winning 8 unless it turns into an expensive upgrade for winning 10.

You're right to check! Let me clarify: Windows 10 is not a free upgrade for 8.1/8 users, but it does offer a free upgrade path from Windows 7. The $30 fee applies only to Windows 7 users upgrading to Windows 10.
