Is this a faulty power supply unit?
Over the last few weeks my computer has been shutting down completely except for the actual machine itself. This covers the monitor, mouse, and keyboard. The system keeps running, but I have to manually turn it off from the case. The situation has reached a point where it doesn’t even appear on the log screen before powering off. When I shut it down, the display restarts and my mouse loses power.
Specs:
GPU: GTX 1060
CPU: i7 2600K
SSD: Kingston 960TB
PSU: Corsair vs550
It sometimes resolves itself by re-seating the power cables to the GPU and other components, but occasionally leaving the PC off seems to help temporarily. Also worth mentioning is that none of the GPU, CPU, or SSD have ever experienced issues since at least 2023.
Any suggestions I could try would be very helpful.
Welcome to the forums, newcomer!
psu: corsair vs550
That unit is indeed weak, even if brand new. It's the same type of unit the green-labeled CX models from Corsair have been (or are) used for, as they're still available on some shelves.
How recent is your PSU? You might want to check the rest of your motherboard for any damaged, swollen, or leaking capacitors.
any suggestions I could offer.
Source(borrow, not purchase) a well-built PSU with at least 550W capacity for your entire system and see if it helps.
You should verify each part separately. The easiest part to check is the GPU, because you can simply change the cables to the monitor and plug it into the motherboard instead, while removing the card from the mainboard. If the issue persists, it’s likely not the GPU. The remaining parts will be more challenging, especially without replacement components. Based on my experience, a PSU tends to fail by overheating or exploding, leaving a strong burnt plastic odor. Freezes like this often point to CPU or motherboard problems. However, without testing all components, it’s difficult to confirm. You might also consider running a stress test on the CPU or checking if its temperatures exceed normal levels.
i'm not certain because the pc was given to me and i changed some components, but i think it's been at least 3 to 4 years or possibly longer. i don't have any other psu that i could borrow either.
this pc is a bit outdated and lacks ports other than vga. i don’t have any vga monitors or cables. when it was functioning properly a few days ago, there were no high temperatures on the cpu or any other components. another issue is that i have almost no spare parts available, which is why i reached out to this site originally.
When you have access to the system for free, swapping out the PSU for a higher-quality one seems like a smart move.
now im really confused. so i made sure that all my power cables were plugged in properly. made sure everything was perfectly fine, it worked for a while. i turn it off and have it plugged in but not on for an hour. come back and it doesnt work. also i figured out an error code ive been getting. it means that there is an bad expansion card or in this case gpu. i then did what was previously mentioned and now i dont know what to do. the gpu is fine but i think it has something to do with psu. after all the only thing i did was make sure all the power cables were in right. but even then it doesnt work sometimes. the gpu, pcie slot and pcie power cable all seem to be fine. the only thing im not fully clear on is the power supply.
is there any kind of thing that happens with psus where they just dont give enough power, or dont work correctly. most of the time this happens when i leave it plugged in while not being used. is this an issue that can happen?
It's tough to deny the possibility of the motherboard being outdated, given its age.
