Is this a decent overclock?
Mobo: Z170x Gaming 7
Cpu: i5-6400 @2.7 OC @4.53ghz
Cooler: Corsair H115i (got for $50 from a buddy so I know it's overkill but it was $50)
Ram: 16gb of Adata. 2x8gb
Gpu: MSI GTX1060 3gb OCv1
2TB hard drive
Adata 120gb SSD
Thanks to you guys I have bought a new motherboard to start my quest as a non-k overclocker.
I've got my CPU running at 4.53ghz, I've gotten up to 4.8 but it didn't last an hour in prime 95 but I ran 4.53 for 6 hours so it's obviously more stable. Highest temp reached was 58 Celsius and averaged around 55 on load in a stress test. Idles at 30. CpuV is st 1.350v Just wanted to know if this is a good overclock or a great one.
It appears to be a really good overclock, definitely better than what I could achieve with my I5. Great news! The temperatures are looking fine—just continue watching and maintain the clock speed.
A significant overclock has been shown to remain stable for a long time, exceeding 6 hours. It also operates well above the standard speed, reaching over 1500mhz, which is impressive but stability remains a question.
I've run it for a few days now with idling and under load (BF1, GTA5, and I cranked up Witcher 3), but someone said that for my gaming purpose of 6 hours on prime95 it's overkill. Since during the games your CPU might not always be at full load, it has "breaks" and so far I think it's really stable. I could try pushing more voltage, I was stable at 1.4 as well but it started getting hot around 60 degrees Celsius. And I prefer the 50 area.
This OC looks promising if it holds up well. I plan to perform a 24-hour Prime95 test after fine-tuning the settings, just to confirm its stability. While some debate exists about long runs, it’s always good to verify if adjustments are needed. I tend to prioritize stability more than others.
Even if I needed to increase it to 1.375 or 1.4, I'd be fine. I attempted a 5ghz setting but it crashed quickly—windows loaded but then stopped within minutes. At the time, I was at 4.8 and was trying to push too hard, so I adjusted to 4.5 because I thought that would suffice.

If all you do is game then 6 hours is likely fine but you could still have a crash here and there. If you do have some odd crashes and it bothers you then a 24 hours run of Prime95 would help pinpoint it.
Update for everyone: I pushed harder for a better clock speed. Reached 4.86ghz at 1.42V temperatures were almost identical. Prime95 ran for six hours with an average of 58°C, hitting 74 once but then dropping to 55-60°C. I plan to keep this near an 80% boost and it feels great knowing I won’t even reach those temps most likely. Thanks all.
