I swear (after several tests and even having a friend verify I wasn’t hallucinating), but I can definitely pick up a very weak (I don’t know the source or which part) sound from my open case PC, coming from a few inches away. It’s a faint "electronic" buzz whenever I highlight text in a document. When I move the mouse up to select a paragraph, it produces a soft noise—almost imperceptible—and when I move it back down to deselect, the same sound occurs again. I tried just moving the mouse without selecting anything, and there was no noise at all. Only when I’m actively selecting text does it happen. How unusual is this? Or is it typical?

PS: Just rechecked, and the noise also appears when I hover over files and folders in C:/. or any other area with folders. But not when I hover over empty space. Do all PCs make this sound and we just don’t notice it because most cases aren’t open like mine?

Most electronic gadgets produce some sound during operation, though it rarely reaches loud enough to be noticeable. This is usually due to coil whine, which can be mildly bothersome but not harmful. Could you pinpoint the exact source of the noise? Is it coming from the GPU, motherboard, power supply, or speakers? I own an EVGA 850W PSU that I've used for years as a test unit because it tends to make a lot of coil whine. It always runs at full capacity and has never caused any problems, though it is definitely loud when it does.

My laptop produces coil whine when I move my mouse, and my desktop does too. It seems the issue depends on how sensitive you are to these sounds. Likely it's related to high polling rate or refresh rate displays. Adjusting the polling rate on my laptop changes the frequency, but on my desktop I haven't noticed it anymore since I switched mice. I should verify if this still happens. This was also true with my old Steelcase mouse.
