Water damaged your reliable ThinkPad wired keyboard (USB type "A") with trackpoint Sk-8855, which has been in use for over ten years. Now several keys are not functioning even after a week of drying. I know it uses keys from a T420 series laptop. Can I swap it out for a T420 keyboard? The dead keyboard cable connects to the SK8855 board, and that board has a 5-pin socket which the USB cable fits into. Will the new T420 keyboard work? Should I repair it or go for a new Lenovo Thinkpad with a wired and wireless keyboard that has trackpoint and a poor USB type "c" connection?

Out of curiosity, how did you dry said keyboard? Maybe
tear down the keyboard
from the chassis, flip it upside down so the pores are facing up towards the sky and leave it to dry...? I'd suggest replacing it with something more modern. In your free time, you can check if the keyboard is worth fixing and then keep it just for nostalgia. You might as well get a mechanical keyboard and pair it with a mouse of your choice.

I dismantled the keyboard and let it dry in the sun for roughly a week! Will a T420 keyboard fit and function properly with the SK-8855 assembly and USB connection? As someone who has used a ThinkPad for over 20 years, I’m hesitant to change brands—what’s the point of buying a newer keyboard if I already love my current setup?
