Hello, this is my first question on such forums, I hope I haven't missed the main point of the discussion here.
My current laptop is a Predator Triton 500, which is about five years old now. I have been having difficulties maintaining low temperatures to prolong its life, but its performance is starting to decline.
I am considering upgrading to a slim, powerful laptop with an integrated graphics card and connecting an eGPU.
However, I’m unsure if all high-end CPUs from laptops are suitable for gaming, since these devices are typically designed for office use. Should the CPU be compatible with a GPU in this way?
Another issue I have is that cooling in an office laptop may not be able to handle increased loads and overheating—especially above 80°C, which seems inevitable in my tests of two gaming laptops.
Would this approach be feasible? Are there any factors I should consider before proceeding?

What budget have you set aside for this purchase? Where are you from and which store do you prefer to buy from?
Just curious—have you adjusted the voltage settings on your CPU core, cache, iGPU, and discrete GPU? Did you reinstall the GPU drivers after using DDU in an elevated command?

When working with an external GPU enclosure on a laptop, typically the only requirement is a Thunderbolt port on the device.

Predator is my current laptop, for this configuration I aim to upgrade to something similar to Asus Zanbook or something with a touch screen. It should be slim, compact yet powerful in terms of CPU performance. For the price, I would like to stay under 1000 euros. I’m based in the Netherlands. With the GPU, I hope to get better or at least equal to 3070 under 400 euros. I’m not very experienced with buying GPUs and don’t know the current actual prices. If you could suggest some reliable, non-expensive websites, it would be really helpful.

I’ve tried everything on my current laptop—undervolting, reinstalling, even replacing the motherboard (under warranty). It still had issues, like reaching 70 degrees with just an open browser. The drivers might be outdated, provided by the manufacturer, or it doesn’t work properly.

Now I’ve tested an Omen 16 with a 3070 Ti and it performs well with no lag in most games. Despite this, the CPU reaches 85 degrees in almost every game while the GPU stays at 65. I’m concerned that after two years, my laptop might stop working properly due to overheating, and I want a long-term solution.

Do you think I’d face problems with CPU cooling on slim laptops like I mentioned?

That's good to hear. If it works well together, the laptop model shouldn't be a major problem. Do you think the enclosure plays a big role? For example, does the connection performance vary based on the enclosure type? I was wondering if we could check something like TH3P4G3 or see if there are more confirmed models.

The issue is that very few laptops maintain stable temperatures similar to desktops. Most processors are built to operate between 80-100°C, which is typical. What stands out is an unexpected drop in performance. This usually signals a cooling problem. For example, CPUs are bonded to heatsinks using thermal grease. Over time, repeated temperature changes can cause this grease to dry out and crack. Once that occurs, the CPU isn’t cooled properly by the heatsink, and clock speeds drop significantly to try and compensate for the failed cooling. Since CPU speed depends heavily on its cooling efficiency, any malfunction in that system—like the one described—can lead to reduced performance. Another cause could be dust blocking the air intakes of the heatsink fan.

You also wonder if its behaviour might change only if cooling becomes worse. Additionally, you're curious about other possible causes if there are no issues.

When was the last time you refreshed your operating system and its background applications and services? Have you installed any peripheral programs that run quietly in the background?
