Is there a PSU upgrade option for my Dell desktop PC?
Hi everyone, I own a Dell XPS 8700 with the following parts:
Intel Core i7-4790
PNY GeForce GTX 970
16 GB DDR3 RAM
PNY CS900 120 GB SSD
Western Digital WD10EZEX-75M2NA0 - 1TB HDD
Dell D460AM-02 PSU
I’m not very familiar with computer hardware and was searching for a GPU upgrade, especially RTX 30 series (mainly 3060ti). I noticed many of these components aren’t compatible with my existing PSU (the original Dell D460AM-02, 460W).
I came across various considerations such as 80+ ratings, voltage rails, connector types, size, and overall system load. These factors have made me more uncertain about my current setup: Corsair AX760, Corsair TX750, Thermaltake Smart 700W. (I’m planning to purchase them used).
Will these PSUs be suitable? And are there any other more affordable and better options available?
I believe the TX and possibly the AX were well received when they first came out... more than a decade ago... I’m not familiar with the Thermaltake. What’s important with used units is whether they’ve been misused. It’s unlikely you can be certain about that. Your present graphics card has a rating near 150 watts, so your existing power supply should still suffice unless it’s in poor condition. Age might play a role. The current PSU could be incompatible with newer cards... I’m not sure. A solid new unit rated at 550 watts or more would likely cost around $90 or more in the US unless you spot a discount.
I don't suggest purchasing a used power supply that has been around for ten years. It's rarely a reliable choice, regardless of its condition. Where do you typically acquire your power supply?
I recall reading some feedback about my current PSU not delivering consistent and strong performance when paired with the RTX 2060, making it uncertain if it would function well with the 30 series. Are there any other aspects of the PSUs I need to consider besides wattage? (I’m already aware of my size requirements)
That is certainly possible.
PSU internal design has changed in the last 10 years or so. I think cabling and connectors have also.
It may be that none of those 3 supplies you mention even have the right cabling for a 3060ti. What would be your next move then? You might be forced to a newer design even if that meant buying a "not so good" power supply.
I don't use video cards, so I have no reason to keep up on what a 3060ti might require.
Plenty of people here would frown at you using a 10 year old PSU even if it was perfectly compatible, but ultimately you control the budget.
You are working with a Dell motherboard.
Dell is recognized for using specialized hardware instead of common industry components.
This could present a significant challenge for you.
I have no certainty whether an industry-standard component such as those Corsair power supplies would work with a Dell motherboard. They might not be effective for your needs.
You may find some information from Dell forums or user discussions, but I'm unable to assist further.
Dell PCs show a range; some come with ATX PSUs, others with custom ones. You should verify the presence of a 24-pin motherboard connector and either 4 or 8-pin CPU connectors. The tier lists are generally reliable.
