It might be due to the outdated CPU and limited RAM from the NAS, which has been around for over a decade. This equipment was once very costly and might still be in use, though you may be handling modern enterprise solutions now. You seem to be dealing with high storage needs but poor access speeds, possibly because of the old hardware and large data volumes.

No, I'm not relying on 'cutting edge enterprise' gear.

There are three Synology units: one from 2015, another from 2013 and a third from 2012. One model has 18 drives, the other two have 12 each but are separate systems and not connected. Memory capacities vary—one has 6GB, another 4GB and the third 2GB. My PC is up to date.

Probably not directly related to the original issue, yet having worked with FreeFileSync for a few years now, I've utilized its versioning option. This allows old file versions to be moved to a designated folder (as specified by the user) when files are deleted or overwritten, enabling the user to review all previous versions before removing them.

That’s achieved by configuring Freefilesync to “mirror’ instead of ‘synchronise’.
