I've been juggling summer classes and work lately, and today I was just browsing my PC and start menu. Minecraft Windows 10 Edition popped up as a new program. I realized I had disabled Windows Store recommendations, which made this seem suspicious. Curious, I clicked around out of interest. I didn’t buy it. My wife mainly uses the PC for bills, while I rely on her iPad for everything else. When did this become free on Windows 10? My search didn’t turn up much—no results from Microsoft either. Was this part of the Creators update? If not, when did it happen? I actually played it. It wasn’t a gimmick or a demo; it was straightforward. So maybe it’s a good deal—I could trade in my dying PS3 for Minecraft on my PC without spending money. Perhaps it’s connected to the Xbox Live and PC Gaming campaign? Still, I’m not sure if I missed anything. I thought it would have been advertised if it were important.

This appears to be a free option for PC Java versions.

They offered around one million copies if you had the Java version, which is basically free since almost everyone has a Minecraft account. It wouldn’t be surprising they decided to make it free.

I didn't get it for PC. The only versions available are for mobile platforms (iOS and Android) and the PS3. It's a bit surprising since I only have those options. Also, having it downloaded automatically feels a bit suspicious.

This brings to mind a project Samsung worked on a few years back. One day I tried using my tablet and found an unfamiliar app listed in the app store as a paid item, even though I hadn’t bought it myself. I’m still puzzled about how it ended up there.

This reminds me of Apple's U2 download initiative where they distributed a free U2 album to everyone, pushing the download. Personally, I don’t care much about U2 or their music, but I wasn’t thrilled about being forced to download it, and it was removed shortly afterward.

Wow, it hurts to hear that. I wasn’t aware they were still enjoying U2! The auto-download feature is quite odd.

I didn't realize U2 was something until it was unexpectedly installed on my device.

They didn't buy it. Microsoft put it in without your consent (a common practice for them, since they also push Candy Crush to your throat).
