Hi all.
I recently purchased and set up a new GPU (2070 super -> RX 7800 XT) and have noticed my internet connection is frequently dropping. It intermittently cuts out for about 30 seconds to a minute before reconnecting. I’m using a wired Ethernet Cat7 cable, and my PC does not have Wi-Fi.
I’ve tried several solutions:
- Plugging and unplugging the Ethernet cable
- Using a different Ethernet cable
- Checking the IP configuration
- Disabling IPv6
- Setting a static IP address
- Restarting the PC
- Reinstalling network drivers
- Rolling back network drivers
- Updating network drivers to the latest version
- Clearing DNS settings
- Enabling power management save power mode in Ethernet settings
Notes:
BIOS was updated. I used DDU to reinstall drivers during GPU changes.
The Ethernet cable has no red X or warning indicators in the settings.
When the drop occurs, "ipconfig" displays "media disconnected" for the Ethernet port.

If the clean boot resolves the issue, it likely points to a startup program. Try restarting the stopped programs one by one to identify the culprit.
Throughout the years, I've encountered issues with 1.0G and 2.5G Ethernet chipsets on motherboards. In certain cases, these chipsets aren't compatible with the firmware in my older 10G Netgear Ethernet switch, causing similar dropouts as you mentioned. Occasionally, updating the chipset driver resolves the matter. For your setup, consider downloading drivers from the motherboard manufacturer's site (Gigabyte) or the chipset maker's website (Realtek). Here are the links:

In 2022, I gave up searching for a functional 2.5G Realtek chipset on my new Asus Prime X670-F and instead installed an older dual-port 1G Intel server card. It performed flawlessly. Later, I replaced the Intel card with a 10G Asus XG-C100C. I turned off the built-in 2.5G chipset and haven't tested newer drivers for that version.
Attempt to locate the precise part number of your network chipset and look for others who've faced similar challenges. If all else fails, consider using a standalone network card, especially if you have an available PCI-e slot. It's likely to be a Realtek or Intel model, and at around $20 or less, it could resolve the issue.

what make/model psu?
i only ask because there might be power issues and random ethernet disconnections. if the power is unstable, it could also affect usb devices. next step would be to turn off the gpu, as it seems to be trying to ensure the cpu has enough power. 750 should be sufficient for the gpu.

I set up a System Restore Point in Windows prior to updating drivers. This allows you to revert the system if the new driver causes issues.
