Recently put together a new rig for my brother and it worked well for a month until this week. Then it began showing BSODs while gaming and when idle. At first, I thought it was due to memory instability and trying to run at 7600mhz, but the problem seems to be inconsistent with the BSOD occurrences. It’s unclear why it would function properly for a month before suddenly failing. Could chipset instability develop over time?

I’ve tried swapping memory modules in the A2/b2 slots; I haven’t replaced a single stick yet, but it’s still on my list. We changed the BIOS to disable fast boot on memory. I also used an XMP profile 2 which set the memory to 7800mhz with different timings, but the issue persisted.

All drivers were updated via the Gigabyte command center, GPU drivers refreshed, and Windows 11 installed. I checked for Samsung Magician firmware updates for the 990 Pro. Ran MSEventviewer and found Event ID 28 in the logs, which matches the system crashes and seems related to USB problems. He uses a Steel series keyboard/headset that adjusts settings via a hub instead of Windows, so we used Revo Uninstaller and refreshed drivers.

We cleared the CMOS when entering into BIOS, but he noticed his keyboard saved profiles before Windows booted up, assigning the enter key elsewhere—a mistake that prevented access to BIOS. His BIOS version is F4, and they offer an F5D, though I haven’t tried it yet. He’s hesitant about detuning memory to 7200mhz or 7400mhz, which might fix the issue but he’s resistant.

I’ve considered purchasing G.Skill modules and returning them if the same problem arises.

Rig specs are as follows:
- 14900k
- Z790 Aorus Master X
- DDR5 7600mhz Corsair titanium (CL36)
- EVGA 1600W PSU
- Samsung 990 Pro 4TB
- Cooler Master HAF EVO
- Gigabyte 4090 Water Force
- 21 D30 fans...

Hey there,
Have you checked the mem outside Windows? Try memtest86+ and run it four times. If you see any errors, your RAM might be bad.

Hi! Stubborn brother here – Wookie has gathered most of the important details from the first message.
I’m new to the specifics of PC troubleshooting, especially regarding BIOS, RAM, etc., so I apologize if my words are off.
Only the crash information is available for each incident.
The first crash happened when starting Cyberpunk 2077 after a patch update. More crashes have appeared when changing Voice Channel settings in Discord, right after launching Steam, and occasionally while idle at the desktop and being offline.
I just completed the memtest86+ test, results can be viewed here:

All the failure numbers and addresses differ, but I see a trend in how the expected vs actual failures line up. For example, position 6 was the only spot where all five failures occurred. I’m not sure if this matters, please let me know. Thanks for any assistance!

Did you manage to fix it? Having a similar issue.

No more than zero errors indicate an issue. Consider replacing RAM or disabling XMP.

I didn't resolve the issue directly. Gradually, the crashes started happening more often—not just sporadically. The most recent boot failure or crash occurred roughly a month ago.
I realized that if these problems kept happening frequently enough to matter, I would replace the RAM since nothing else has fully stopped the crashes, including disabling XMP as drivinfast247 recommended.

Reviving a thread from its previous state to present the solution I discovered—BIOS update to version F8 fixed the issue, and it also enabled RAM clocking up to 7600, increasing from 7000.
