Is the Ryzen 9900X3D showing poor performance on a single core?
If you send me a shout on Discord (same name and avatar as here), I can guide you through setting up your CPU and RAM configuration.
When you download benchmate, you can execute CineBench R23 and PyPrime (selecting 32B in the category window) and compare your outcomes with your 9900X3D to my 9800X3D, helping you decide if I’m reliable or not.
My hardware details are as follows:
Motherboard: GigaByte X670e AORUS Master
CPU: Ryzen 7 9800X3D
Cooler: Arctic Liquid Freezer III 360 with three Phanteks T30 120mm fans
TIM: Thermal Grizzly Duronaut
PSU: SeaSonic Prime TX-1000, 1000 Watt Titanium
RAM: 96GB Corsair Vengeance (2x48GB) DDR5 6000MT/S 30-36-36-76 EXPO
The CineBench R23 result after ten minutes is:
Here is the outcome of running PyPrime with 32B:
Thanks for the offer. I'll experiment with a different chip and check the outcomes first.
I've figured it out. The problem seems to be related to a software/Windows issue from reinstalling Windows on a new partition. I'm seeing above average single-thread and low-thread scores on both OCCT and 3DMark (PBO -30). I haven't checked other benchmarks, but they might show similar results. Both installations use the same Windows version, and the core utility error has disappeared in this new install. Resetting Windows after replacing the motherboard/CPU with the 'keep my files' option didn't seem to cause any problems, though it's unclear if that would have been the issue. I'm still trying to understand what might have caused these issues.
I’ve seen similar comments many times on this forum (no issue with your specific comment). While I understand that a strong VRM is preferable for long-term stability, a weak VRM rarely leads to poor performance if the board meets the CPU requirements as specified by the manufacturer. Have you faced any problems like this in a recent build using a compatible board? I haven’t. You may achieve better results with a larger VRM, but based on my experience, consistent average performance will remain unless you push beyond safe limits.
Even without personal experience, issues can still exist. In a recent review of B850 chipset options, it was noted that supporting any Ryzen 7000/9000-series CPU doesn’t guarantee a problem-free setup. Testing showed VRM temperatures exceeding 100°C after one hour of Cinebench with the R9 9950X CPU, despite these boards being marketed as compatible. Some models have weak VRM configurations, which can cause throttling and lower performance. The quality of the power delivery is crucial, especially for high-end processors.
These charts indicate that a subpar VRM configuration won't significantly impact performance, while a well-chosen one will remain largely unnoticeable under typical operating conditions.
