Is the Ryzen 7 7800X3D a good purchase?
Is the Ryzen 7 7800X3D a good purchase?
Hello, I’m currently using a Ryzen 5 5600 with an RTX 3080. After switching to a 4K 240Hz display, I experienced a significant drop in frames per second from 1440p. I’ve been thinking about upgrading and am focusing on the Ryzen 7 7800X3D since my monitor now supports 240Hz, compared to my previous 165Hz. I’m aiming to take full advantage of my display’s refresh rate.
I enjoy playing single-player games like TLO and Gow, but mostly compete in FPS shooters such as Warzone, BF6, and FN. In these titles, especially at competitive settings, the FPS is often unstable, making it hard to maintain 240fps consistently, even during low performance. I’m wondering if the Ryzen 7 7800X3D would be a good upgrade path, or if another CPU would give me similar results. I’m planning to replace my 3080 with a 5080 soon. Your thoughts would be greatly appreciated.
PSU: 850w Deepcool 80 Plus Gold
Deepcool is the manufacturer of the device, while 850W and 80 plus Gold refer to the advertised power rating or efficiency. Could you provide details about the model and its age?
The 7800X3D would definitely be a higher-end option and maintain performance for a longer time. Ensure it's matched with a low-latency, dual-channel DDR5-6000MHz RAM system featuring AMD's E.X.P.O branding.
What cooling solution are you using?
Why do you choose 4k when your main focus is frame rate? Adjust it to 1024 and lower game settings, and you'll achieve the highest possible frame rate.
This tends to vary by game, but simulation titles usually rely more on GPU power than CPU.
On review platforms that test CPU performance, they often run games at 1080p using the latest high-end GPUs. This happens because 4k demands similar FPS across most CPUs, masking differences with the GPU.
Still, if you have a 7800x3d, it's a solid upgrade when you can afford it. These units were hard to find for a long time and sold at higher prices than the newer 9800x3d.
Hey, to answer your questions, my Psu model is the pm850d, grabbed it new nearly 2 years ago. I couldnt know if it's running at its advertised wattage so I could only hope. As for my cooling, I have an nzxt kraken x53.
Hey, the reason I went for 4k was because I also spend a lot of time playing story games and on 4k the textures are stunning. I'll likely be grabbing the 7800x3d as some have already suggested it's a great step up
You won’t face major CPU problems at 4K resolution, especially with a card that struggles to keep up in recent updates. For a more budget-friendly choice, the 5800X3D is much cheaper and provides a noticeable performance boost without being too far behind newer models. It performs similarly to the 9700X, and even the 5080 will only reach around 72 FPS in TLOU. A 240Hz setting isn’t particularly beneficial. I’d suggest limiting it to 120 and opting for a cooler, quieter setup.
You're reaching the point where gains slow down significantly, the gap between 144 and 240 becomes almost insignificant and I must tell you this—it's worse than the latency your screen shows. The 5800X3D is the most affordable choice, but at 4K resolution your GPU will struggle, and you really need to achieve extremely high frame rates.
If you aim to switch to an AM5 platform, the optimal choice is the most recent available option, which offers a 9800x3d performance, not the 7800x3d version. However, if you prefer to maintain the AM4 setup, then 5800x3d or 5700x3d would be suitable alternatives.
