A 64-bit operating system would significantly raise your memory usage, while a 32-bit version could handle about 3.5GB. If the BIOS doesn't recognize your RAM, the OS won't either.

They placed the original item back in the second position - acknowledged. Then they took out the old one and put the new one there - acknowledged. Strange, right?

Don't know what bios choices are offered.
Check the settings for a RAM cap limit.
Look for a BIOS update option.
Consider trying a 2 stick setup.
