I just got my first PC and am considering purchasing a VR headset. I understand that the Rift S uses internal tracking, which some users find unreliable. Do you have any insights or suggestions about other headsets?
I don't believe PSVR is overly impressive; its capabilities are somewhat restricted in comparison to other options. It's not ideal for modding or performance, but it's still a decent choice. I haven't used the Rift S personally, though I've been using the Rift (original model) for about a year and a half—it's been an amazing experience. The Rift S offers an 80Hz refresh rate, whereas the Rift has 90Hz, which is impressive for me since I'm not particularly fond of very high refresh rates. I'd prefer the Rift over the Rift S in that regard.
I think the internal tracking might make it a bit heavier, but with proper adjustments like straps, it shouldn't be a major issue. Overall, no matter which you choose, you'll be amazed—especially since stepping into the virtual world is always entertaining. The HTC Vive has received good reviews, though the controllers felt bulky to me (I haven't tried one), but others say it's fine. You only need two tracking stations instead of three for room-scale tracking with the Oculus Rift.
Thanks for the details! The 80Hz display of the S model versus the 90Hz original was another factor that made me cautious about buying. Also, because it uses a single LCD screen rather than OLED like the original, I've heard black colors can appear a bit gray in dark game areas due to the backlight. It seems like every option has its advantages and disadvantages. I think I’ll go ahead and get it since the environment I play in doesn’t have ideal sensor placement spots, which makes internal tracking helpful. I already have the PSVR now and it’s really fun to use, but it definitely doesn’t match other headsets in quality—low resolution, limited field of view, poor tracking, etc.
Based on what I've observed, the Rift S seems to be the top option for PC-powered VR currently since it doesn't require external tracking equipment. A friend of mine owns an Oculus Quest, and he let me test it—it was really impressive! The Quest offers a 72Hz refresh rate, which isn't much, but it's still fine for the experience.
I purchased it a couple of nights ago. I've enjoyed it, though I'm a bit let down by the FOV. On paper it offers a much wider field of view than the PSVR, but in practice it doesn't feel that way since your eyes are farther from the lenses. It wasn't the upgrade I anticipated, but it remains quite enjoyable to use.
