Hi,
My laptop is a Gigabyte AORUS 15X ASF (2023) with the following setup:
CPU: i7-13700HX
GPU: RTX 4070m
RAM: 16GB
It runs both Windows 11 and MX Linux.

A few months ago, during a thunderstorm, my dog got excited and chewed on several items in my "office," including the power cable from the power brick to the laptop. I had to re-solder the cable multiple times before it worked properly... until yesterday.

Last night, I moved the laptop and its power supply between rooms and accidentally dropped the (1kg) power brick onto the ground. It was covered with PVC tiles, so there seemed to be no visible damage.

I connected the charger, used the PC briefly, then returned home. When I tried to charge it again, I noticed it wasn’t charging and the battery was dead.

Using a multimeter, I checked the power brick and found it shows 20.4v when plugged in, but when connected to the laptop it drops to 0v immediately. I suspect this could be due to a faulty battery. I removed the laptop’s back panel, disconnected the battery, and plugged it in—same result.

I haven’t managed to locate another power supply with the same part number online (Chicony A18-280P1A - A280A015P, 20.0v, 14.0A). I contacted Gigabyte to inquire about purchasing one directly, but given their reputation, I’m unsure if they’ll respond quickly.

My questions are:
1. Could a power supply fail after just one drop? Might my previous soldering attempts have caused damage?
2. The nearest power supply I own is rated 19.0v, 1A. Should I try plugging it in to see if it charges the laptop and check for any motherboard issues?
3. Any alternative suggestions to resolve this problem?

Thanks.

I haven't managed to locate a power supply matching that part number online (Chicony A18-280P1A - A280A015P, 20.0v, 14.0A).
The item you mentioned is available at G+ Outlet. For popular computer parts, visit G+ Outlet for discounted prices and a wider selection.

Thank you for your reply!
The site needs a Taiwanese phone number or a "Line" account, which feels like an equivalent to WhatsApp in Asia. Most content is in Taiwanese, including their shopping guide, and it seems they don’t ship internationally...
I would have been satisfied with the price around 90EUR/110USD for the exact same model.
This one isn’t the identical version: A18-280P1A - A280A0 with 13P, whereas mine is A18-280P1A - A280A0 with 15P. I saw a similar "13P" variant at a lower price elsewhere, possibly for a different plug size. I’ll get a new battery for my digital calipers tomorrow and compare the measurements.
What I aimed to avoid was purchasing a new power supply only to discover the motherboard had failed. Any way to check if the PC is in good condition before ordering the power supply?

I tried to prevent purchasing a new power supply only to discover the motherboard was already faulty. How can I verify the PC is still in good condition before placing an order for the power supply?

I would have liked having the right tools and expertise to do that!
It seems more sensible to purchase a new power supply instead.
Looking at the specifications, the main distinction lies in those three numbers 3/5.
If the jack sizes are compatible, could there be any chance of harming the laptop?

It makes sense to consider purchasing a new power supply or having it repaired. Alternatively, visit a repair shop to check if your soldering has affected the adapter or if any components in the power brick failed, such as a capacitor. From what I observed, the main difference between the two power supplies is the specifications for 3/5. That's why I didn't elaborate further. I also suggest giving Gigabyte's support some time and see their response. If the jack sizes are compatible, could there be any chance of damaging the laptop?

Unfortunately, there are no repair shops nearby that can handle this.
I'm waiting a week for a reply from Gigabyte.
I repeated my initial message in French and added another in English to check if it helps.
I also contacted the two websites where I bought the 13p variant.
Thank you for your assistance! I'll update you once I have an answer.

hello, i'm facing the same problems as OP in searching for this particular charger online. they're trying to find a backup charger and are confused about whether the A280A013P or A280A015P works with their laptop. to be clear, the 13P has a 5.5mmx2.5mm design, while the 15P is 5.5mmx1.7mm.

I contacted Gigabyte support and they provided me with the A280A015P. The cost was around 130 USD, but now I have it. If local Gigabyte support doesn't have it, you can use the links https://buytaiwanonline.com/ or https://member.letsgobuy-tw.com/ to have them purchase it for you and ship it to you. If you choose this option, I suggest going with lets go buy as their price is about 30 USD lower.

Hi,
I ended up ordering the charger from Gigabyte, just like you did and received it today. It took a while to be shipped to South America...
Unfortunately, still no white led near the Dc jack when plugged in, and the laptop won't turn on. I opened the back cover to see if the connector was loose but it is still firmly soldered to the MB.
I did notice that a pin inside the jack barrel seems shorter/bent. I tried to look online for a picture of the inside of the barrel but couldn't find any to see it is supposed to look like this.

, would you mind telling me what your plug looks like?
