I was thinking about improving my CPU from an i5 4590 (4c 4t) to an i5 10400 (6c 12t). I also plan to switch RAM from 8GB DDR3 to 16GB DDR4 (with a new motherboard). I’m curious if the 10400 is a good investment right now. I know the 12400 is coming up, but it will have the same cores and threads. The 11400 seems to work better at a higher price, uses less power, and generates less heat. It would cost about $300 overall. I’m not sure if you think this upgrade makes sense, especially since I don’t have much experience with CPUs. Thanks for any advice!

It will be used for gaming, offering superior performance compared to the 4590. The 11400 provides significantly better results, outperforming the 10400 in most scenarios.

It depends on the cost. The 10400 offers a significant improvement over the 4590. The 11400 is superior and could be a good choice if it's only slightly pricier.

there is more to a CPU than just core and thread count. The 12400 is rumored to have significant single thread uplift compared to the 10400. It also will release within a month, and you might be able to get a really good deal on a used 10400. Higher price, power consumption and heat I'll agree on, but same performance, no. It does perform significantly better, somewhere around 10-15% depending on the situation. Don't trust Userbenchmark if that's where you got that information from. I think it's worth waiting the month to see how the 12400 and whatever AMD releases to compete will be. Both are rumored to show up within a month or so, and your system should be able to hold you over till then.

I focused mainly on gaming speed (though not the most consistent). This won’t be used for any other purposes besides gaming. My GTX 970 is relatively outdated, so it shouldn’t exceed 10,400 or go much higher than 11,400.

I'm using this upgrade mainly for gaming. A CPU with just four threads isn't performing well anymore. I saw a YouTube video showing strong results with what I think is a 2060 model, but since my GPU is even worse than that, I'm not sure it will make a noticeable difference for me.

Likely not, yet once you upgrade to a GPU, choose a CPU that matches the performance of the new card.

Agreed. I'll hold off on the purchase until I see the 12400, since even without buying it now, prices for older CPUs could fall. My main goal is to upgrade because my games are freezing a lot, and I'm certain it's not the 970 model.

It won't take much time before it's revealed—rumors suggest it will be unveiled at CES (January 3-6) and could go live in about two weeks.
