Is the Asus Z590 motherboard causing the PC to fail to boot, while the green BOOT LED and white VGA LED remain active?
Is the Asus Z590 motherboard causing the PC to fail to boot, while the green BOOT LED and white VGA LED remain active?
I attempted to start my system this morning, but it failed to boot. There was no display and it remained illuminated with a steady white light. I tried several hard restarts from the case without success. According to the user manual, this appears to be a GPU problem, so I removed the GPU and tested with integrated graphics. Both the constant white light and green light appeared after a couple of seconds, and the system became stuck with just these two lights.
Since then, I've done the following:
- Cleaned and reinserted the GPU
- Tested with integrated graphics while the GPU was still installed
- Swapped and reinserted memory sticks
- Cleared CMOS using both jumper and battery removal methods
- Disconnected or removed the HDD and SSD
None of these steps resolved the issue. Everything was functioning properly until yesterday.
System specifications:
- Core i7-11700K
- MSI GTX 970 OC (needs upgrading)
- Asus TUF Z590-PLUS WiFi
- 16GB Corsair Vengeance
- 850W Corsair RM PSU
- Antec A400 air cooler (insufficient, requires upgrade)
- Built 10 months ago
- Operating system: Windows 10 Pro
LED indicators:
- Green/Yellow Green – BOOT
- White – VGA
- Orange – RAM
- Red – CPU
I only have a DP cable, so I checked using DP ports. I’ll need to purchase an HDMI cable and test it as well. This situation has never occurred with this system before. Please help me resolve this issue.
verify if all links are still stable
consider updating the BIOS via USB after removing the GPU
after disconnecting the GPU, did you run a CMOS reset? and inserted the DP cable into the motherboard?
I verified it multiple times, everything seems securely connected. As you mentioned, this issue might stem from a faulty BIOS. I plan to update the BIOS to the most recent release. I repeated the CMOS reset several times, both before and after removing the GPU. Clearing the CMOS should reset the BIOS configuration that controls the default or preferred graphics output. I connected the DP cable to the motherboard just to test booting with the integrated GPU, but it kept getting stuck and illuminated those lights.
set up the system using the least external work beyond the case (on a non-conductive surface such as wood or uncoated cardboard)
mount the motherboard with PSU (ensure ATX_12V_2 and ATX_12V_1 are connected, at least the 8-pin ATX_12V_1 is adequate)
connect the monitor to the motherboard while the GPU is removed, place one RAM in slot A2
attach the CPU with cooler and fan to the CPU_FAN header
keep the keyboard connected
remove all other plugs, connections, fans, drives, USB, and M.2 devices
verify the CMOS battery is installed correctly with a visible plus sign
check if the CLRTC jumper has been removed
Just wanted to verify it with an HDMI cable (used TV's cable, connected to iGPU) before breadboarding. Whoa! It suddenly started booting normally. Then I re-checked the system using the same DP cable (with iGPU and GTX970 as well), and it booted without any issues. So the DP cable seems to be fine? Then I installed the CMOS battery with a positive voltage always. The jumper looks okay. My guess is the BIOS was bugged for some reason. I’m curious about the cause but don’t know how. Anyway, I’ll update the BIOS to the latest version and let you know if anything goes wrong.
