is the 4790k still worth it?
Hey there, looking for some tips. I got a budget PC today with an ASRock Z97 motherboard, 8GB RAM, an I5 4570T, and an ASUS GTX1070. It works fine but I’m thinking about moving to a 4790K for around $150. Worth it? Or should I wait for something better like Kabylake or newer models? I mainly play at 1440p 60Hz and plan to up to 144Hz soon. Cheers!
Sure thing, that's exactly what I'm hearing. It might even work better with a good cooler and extra boost.
I recently upgraded from an i7 4770k. I was running at 1440p with 165Hz and 1080ti. It handles high frame rates well—often exceeding 100 FPS in most games—but many newer titles keep the CPU busy near 90% to 100%. It’s not a big problem even with a GTX 1070, though my GTX 1080ti didn’t reach its full potential back then. Still, it remains a solid CPU if you manage to buy it cheaply. Around $150 AUD feels quite reasonable.
The 4790K remains a solid CPU choice. The decision hinges on cost and whether it fits your budget. A price of 150aud equals about 95eur, which might be a bit steep but still fairly sensible.
This Ryzen 2600X model costs around 110 euros. Older models remain useful only when you have sufficient RAM and a proper motherboard.
