Is overclocking for noobs?
I was considering purchasing a new motherboard, CPU, and RAM for my PC. I planned to maintain this configuration for around five years, so I thought the i7 8700K would be the optimal choice. However, I noticed that an i5 8600K at 5GHz can achieve similar performance to a stock i7 8700K. I'm wondering if it's worth opting for the i7 8700 or 8700K and keeping it in stock, or if it's better to save over £100 and buy the i5 8600K and an OC motherboard?
Everyone starts as a beginner when they first attempt overclocking. Unlocked multiplier overclocking is the easiest way. Still, try to achieve an overclocking boost because it adds extra power. More cooling for the MB chipset and VRM indicates progress. Choose a case that allows space for a big cooler and multiple fans. A large air cooler is a good starting point. Scythe offers several budget-friendly options, though other choices exist.
that's exactly what I was considering too. i'm not confident about the OC since it's something i've never done before, and i don't want to risk harming my computer.
You're safe by doing your research, I recommend Asus boards for overclocking.
It's difficult to harm the CPU through overclocking since everything stops before damage occurs—it's a protective measure.
Getting into CPU overclocking isn't overly complicated; I can assist you with some options. However, thorough research is still advisable.

If you wish to perform OC, for enjoyment, for education or as a test, go ahead.
However, I suggest avoiding the idea of OC as a means to cut costs.
If you aren’t planning to do OC, you can use almost any mobile with the required connectors. You may select a B360 model cheaper than the Z370 that is suitable for OC.
When doing OC, you should opt for a high-quality Z370 with sufficient power phases to handle the increased load.
A top-notch CPU cooler is also essential for OC.
While it’s always advised to use a good quality PSU, this becomes particularly crucial when performing OC.
Lastly, you need to be ready to explore, validate, fix errors, and invest time.
