I understand someone who owns the appropriate tool for opening their laptop. I plan to explore software options first, as my knowledge on this topic is quite limited.

I don’t understand how to operate a screwdriver. Could you clarify what you mean by "make and model" of the laptop?

I considered using DBAN because it seems straightforward and you mentioned it’s simple online. While I’m not as familiar with Linux, I understand your concern about bad sectors. You’re right to think about isolating them before creating a reliable partition—this could help ensure your OS works properly.

It seems you're referring to using a screwdriver on an HP 245 G7. Let me know if you need further clarification!

Details - 128 GB through 256 GB M.2 SATA SSD spinning drive up to 500 GB with 7200 rpm SATA; 500 GB up to 1 TB with 5400 rpm SATA. Swap a spinning version for a SATA SSD. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pSEHBIIcq64 How to access the underside, remove three screws beneath the front rubber strip, three under the back rubber strip, then separate the components. Removing bits from one unit at 4.09 minutes. Not my preferred method. Extract the disk from the cable port, not the board.

Are there any unusual noises coming from the disk? It seems the drive might be acting strangely, so consider using software such as Clonzilla to create a backup, as the sound suggests potential issues.

Yes, these issues are worth noting.

Uncertain about the process. A filesystem format might indicate unreadable areas. This is why older Windows versions needed 20-30 minutes for a full scan. Linux and newer Windows (Vista and later) bypass this step. I’m not sure how to verify or flag problems, but I’d like to understand.

I finally managed to install an operating system onto my storage after attempting DBAN—it really made a big difference. Your assistance was incredibly valuable.
