Is my computer starting properly even after a restart or power-off?
Each time I power off my PC, it fails to start and displays a black screen, even though the system is still active. This situation is really annoying, particularly when I need to restart for updates. When attempting to turn it back on, it frequently doesn’t boot. At times, it manages to launch after waiting around three minutes, but most of the time I have to wait up to thirty minutes or even until the following day before it powers up again.
I thought my RAM might be the problem, so I tried using another RAM module in a different machine, but the issue persisted. I also replaced the CMOS battery, yet the problem remained unchanged. Still, I can play games without any issues. This computer is five years old yet still supports most contemporary titles. What bothers me most is that after shutting it down, when I return a few minutes later, it either boots or doesn’t start at all. This recurring issue has been a persistent challenge even after last year’s investigation.
Either hardware problem (POST stalls) or software issue (Windows fails to boot).
To clarify:
Disconnect all drives, including the OS drive. This ensures no drives are connected and prevents any booting to the operating system. The PC will immediately enter BIOS after POST ends.
If the system powers on normally, completes POST quickly, and reaches BIOS within a reasonable time, your hardware appears functional. You can exit BIOS, restart the PC, and repeat the process a few times to verify stable POST behavior (in case it boots into BIOS without issues).
If the PC still stalls, the problem likely lies with the CPU, motherboard, RAM, GPU, or power supply unit.
RAM has already been tested. The next step I’d consider is the GPU, as it plays a key role in generating an image. Since your CPU lacks an integrated graphics component, a dedicated GPU will be necessary for accurate testing. You can also evaluate the GPU performance on another machine to compare results.
