Is my 7900XTX Dead?
Is my 7900XTX Dead?
Hello,
I set up a new setup in March 2025:
Hardware: MB: X670-A Asus Rog Strix - (Ex Demo)
Memory: Corsair Dominator 48GB RAM (2x24GM RAM)
Processor: Ryzen 9800X3D
Graphics: AMD 6800XT (Gigabyte AORUS Master) – same GPU as before
Power Supply: Ttake 1200W
In October 2025, I upgraded the graphics card to PowerColor HellHound 7900XT. Prior to this change, my system would fail to power on after recognizing the RAM, and for the first time in two decades of building computers myself, it wouldn’t even start. It shut down abruptly without any display issues—just a complete halt. This occurred intermittently. I assumed the previous demo had been problematic, so I kept monitoring it.
After the GPU upgrade, performance improved, though shutdowns became more frequent. Recently, it experienced four consecutive shutdowns. During this period, the Bluetooth controller failed to initialize (cold boot, power reset, restart), then the GPU would completely disconnect—no display, no response. Eventually, connecting the monitor restored the screen. I removed the GPU, cleared the PCI slot, reinstalled everything, and after a day of use, it worked again. However, BIOS failed to save certain settings, leading me to suspect hardware failure.
I purchased a new MB: X870-A Asus ROG Strix, reinstalling all components, including a fresh Windows install. It functioned for two days before showing only screen issues. When connected to the monitor, the screen turned on. I suspected a power issue and changed the power cables from the PSU (no daisy chains). It worked again for two days, then during a mid-game it displayed a blank screen—though I could still communicate via Discord. Eventually, after several attempts to reinstall, I noticed a red LED on the MB when unplugging the PSU, and the GPU LEDs flickered weakly. Phantom power was off, and USB devices stopped responding.
Finally, I reinstalled the 6800XT and everything functioned normally. Immediately afterward, I observed that my PC ran much quieter compared to the 7900XTX. I began suspecting a possible short circuit in the GPU or an electrical instability. Although my RAM is a 6200MHZ DOHC model and I’ve tried numerous troubleshooting steps, I’m still unsure about the diagnosis.
Any advice or overlooked details would be greatly appreciated.
Best,
SirRustalot
It's possible you received a faulty GPU from the factory—it happens. Did you purchase it new and still have the receipt? How recent is the Thermaltake 1200w PSU, do you know its exact model? Also, just a quick note: are the motherboard standoffs correctly installed in the case? That could lead to shorts or other problems, especially with heavier components like the 7900 XTX. The 7900 XTX draws more power, around 360W, while the 370W model is slightly higher than the 300W 6800 XT. If everything else matches and it's working fine, it’s likely a bad card—consider returning it if possible.
Yeah, I purchased a new one. The PSU is a Thermaltake Toughpower GF3 - 1200W Gold PCIe 5.0 ATX Modular PSU. What caught my attention was that the 6800XT worked on both the X670-E and the X870-A models. The 7900XTX had problems with both. There were also flickering LED issues, which I think point to some electrical instability. Other forums mentioned that the 7900XTX has had several problems with the vapour chambers, though it seems to be limited. There are many reports online about this card that I hadn’t noticed before after doing my research before buying it.
I’m aware of past issues with PCI training and some RAM instability on early AM5 boards, but this new board is up-to-date, and the BIOS was updated to the latest version which fixed most of those problems.
It’s been a process of elimination, and I’m just trying to verify my concerns before deciding whether to return it for a refund or warranty.
If it’s the gf3 it’s likely this one, which I remember is a tier A model.
But the symptoms you’re experiencing seem to point toward power issues, though I’m using the same power supply in my PC. It might be wise to return the xtx and consider getting a replacement 9070xt if the 7900xtx is out of stock. Still, I prefer my 9070xt.
Did you ever verify the temperatures on the 7900XTX? Frequent noise usually means the GPU is overheating, particularly when it crashes. Replacing it with another GPU only supports this conclusion for the 7900 XTX. From what you mentioned, it seems the 7900 XTX might be overheating, possibly needing a repaste or having a faulty heatsink, though heatink problems are less common. Looking up online, I discovered a batch from May 2023 of the Red Devil and Hellhound RX 7900 XTX that had faulty thermal paste application. If you purchased the card during that period, check its manufacture date between December 2022 and April 2023.
Here is the Link for the Specs for the 9070XT for you to check out. Provided by TechPowerup.

It's very sad when a high performance GPU fails but hopefully you can get it replaced and get your PC up and running well again. The 9070XT is just a suggestion, as ohio_buckeye mentioned above, if your current GPU is not available. I wish you success. Please post your decisions and results. Thank you.
